Week 1

  • Discussion: Introductions all around.   Journalism program orientation.  What equipment you should have or be acquiring.
  • Consider:  What is “news?” Historical perspective and changing media technologies.
  • Skills in class
    • How to use the lab / computers
    • How to make a basic portfolio page in WordPress.
  • Read: Harrower   1  (Note: sample chapters from the 2nd edition are available here.)
  • Quizzes 1, 2, 3 :
    • Ch. 1 –  MC, grammar, eWorkbook Exercise 1.1 (600 Years of Journalism History)
  • Exercise 1  –  1  Post links to three of the most interesting stories you find on the web and describe why you think they are interesting.
  • Assignment 1 — Interview a person in class and describe them on your web site.

Week 2

  • Discussion:  Great writing, how news articles are written, what non-fiction writing is all about.  5 Ws.  News values. How much fun is it to work as a  reporter?
  • Read: Harrower   2  / Usually you should be prepared for quizzes on all chapters the end of the week they are assigned. Some of these will be in class and others will be at home.  Most will be on D2L but some may just be on paper.   
  • Quizzes 4, 5, 6 : Ch. 2 –   Multiple Choice (what is news), Grammar, eWorkbook (would you run the story?)  — Q4, 5, 6
  • Exercises – 2:  Read three stories in Harrower’s Morgue and describe what makes them newsworthy.
